School and Library Visits

I love coming to schools and libraries to talk to students! Please contact me via email, (or by using the form at the bottom of the Home page), to check availability and work out personalized content and rates.

Because my books are nonfiction, my visits tend to be STEM focused; I also love to talk about writing and being an author. I tailor my presentation content and length to the age group of the students. Teachers always leave a follow up writing activity for their students.

Rates

Full day (up to 3 full presentations, plus 2-3 smaller writing workshops) $800

Half day (2-3 presentations) $400

  • "We sincerely enjoyed your presentation today. Having attended numerous author talks for the past few years, yours was the most engaging. The content, pace of discussion, and variety of knowledge shared were excellent. Our students sincerely enjoyed the overall experience."

  • "Amanda grabs the audience's attention and makes connections with the students right away. One parent reported her student walking around the house trying to echolocate walls after Amanda explained the concept from her "Springer" book. I highly recommend hosting Amanda as a guest speaker."

School and Library Visits

Spirit of Springer

I include lots of information about orcas, their culture, and calls. I do a partial reading and share special content that couldn’t be included in the printed book. We do an experiment and discuss a writing tip, and I provide a follow-up activity for teachers. This is my favorite presentation to do!

Galloping Gertie

I share information and dispel long-held myths about the infamous engineering failure of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse. We discuss the different types of mechanical waves, do a partial reading of the book, discuss a writing tip, and finish with a bridge-building activity.

Big Bertha

I share information about the inspiration behind Big Bertha, do a partial reading, share a writing strategy, and share some info and fun bits from my other books.

The Best of the Pacific Northwest

I combine my favorite parts of the Spirit of Springer, Galloping Gertie, and Big Bertha presentations. This is especially great for local PNW schools, as all three books are relevant to students.

Writing Workshops

We work on how to create a story and its vital parts when we create our own STORY STORM. I use nonfiction writing for this workshop, but the format can be applied to fiction as well. I also touch on the show-don’t-tell concept. I provide a follow-up writing activity for teachers.
